SUMMARY:Film: 5 Broken Cameras
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Human Rights Film Festival\, we are delighted to
welcome Averil Parkinson for a discussion after the screening. Averil is
Chair of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.\n\n5 BROKEN CAMERAS will be pr
eceded by short film GROWING by Tariq Rimawi. Unfortunately\, Tariq will n
ot be able to attend the screening of his film.\n\nAt the birth of his son
Gibreel\, Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat is given his first movie camera
and begins recording both Gibreel’s childhood and the conflict growing a
round them.\n\nAs Israel’s controversial ‘security barrier’ is built
through their village\, olive groves and buildings are destroyed by Israe
li troops\; violent protests are even more violently suppressed\, and in t
he process the five cameras of the title are smashed. But with the help of
Jewish filmmaker Guy Davidi\, the narrative also reflects moments of hope
and minor triumph that underpin the determined spirit of Burnat\, his fam
ily and their fellow residents.\n\nWhatever one may think about this compl
ex and divisive issue\, Burnat and Davidi’s documentary is an affecting\
, sometimes almost poetic study that reminds us that despite the political
intransigence\, the situation must be one day be resolved.\n\n5 BROKEN CA
MERAS was awarded the IFDA prize at Amsterdam Film Festival and the Audien
ce Award at Sheffield Doc/Fest\, as well as further prizes at Sundance\, L
ondon Open City\, and the Stranger Than Fiction Film Festival in Dublin.\n
