SUMMARY:Parliament Recognises Palestine: What Next?
DESCRIPTION:\n	University of Westminster\, Hogg Lecture Theatre\, 35 Maryle
 bone Road\, NW1 5LSFB: https://www.facebook.com/events/299893600204256/\n
\nMore details to follow:\n\nOrganised by the General Union of Palestinian
Students (GUPS UK) and the University of Westminster - Palestinian Solida
rity Society\n\nParliament took the historic step on October 13th of votin
g unilaterally to back the recognition of Palestinian statehood. Voting b
y 274 to 12\, a majority of 262\, MPs on all sides urged the Government to
“recognise the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel” as p
art of a “contribution to securing a negotiated two-state solution”.\n
\nSignificantly Labour whipped its MPs to vote in favour of the resolution
\, raising the prospect that the party would defy Israel’s wishes and re
cognise Palestine as a state - should it come to power at the next electio
 n. But even previously staunch supporters of Israel within the Conservativ
e Party chose not to oppose the motion\, which was brought by the backbenc
 h Labour MP Grahame Morris.\n\nSpeakers include:\n	Martin Linton\, a Briti
sh Labour Party politician\, who was Member of Parliament for Battersea fr
om 1997 to 2010\n	Sara Apps\, Campaigns Officer at Palestine Solidarity Ca
mpaign\n	Other Palestinian and British diplomats\n\nThey will discuss\, an
alyse and debate both the pros and cons of the recent non-binding vote and
how international public opinion has evidently drifted from Israeli sight
s\, which marks a significant change in the political landscape\, followin
g the failure of successive peace negotiations and the bitter Israeli offe
nsive in Gaza over the summer.\nPurchase a raffle ticket at the door with
the chance to win free entry to Mohammad Assafs’ concert in London on N
 ovember 28th - www.facebook.com/events/770316776342702/\n\nNote: Free ent
