SUMMARY:Traces and Revelations - Palestinian Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“Traces and Revelations” Exhibition is a result of a collab
oration between Arts Canteen-London and Oriental Museum- Durham University
featuring the work of internationally renowned artists Hazem Harb and Moh
ammed Joha from Palestine.\n\nThe work of Harb and Joha explores the theme
s of loss of identity\, home\, diaspora and overcoming the physical and ps
ychological boundaries created by conflict\, specifically in their own per
sonal histories of growing up in Palestine Hazem Harb and Mohammed Joha ha
ve known each other since they were teenagers\, passing in the street in G
aza City\, each carrying artists’ portfolio cases. They are now both wel
l established artists living in Dubai and Italy respectively\, regularly e
xhibiting in major art fairs\, museums and galleries of the Arab world and
beyond. This exhibition seeks to examine the common and disparate element
s of their work: those which could be traced back to their roots in Gaza a
nd those which disrupted simplistic notions of cultural proximity and reve
aled the new and\, often\, alarming.\n\nAser El Saqqa of Arts Canteen\, Lo
ndon\, said\, “The range of work in Traces and Revelations is an impress
ive one\, it harks back to each artists’ earlier work and past lives. F
or both Harb and Joha\, Traces and Revelations opens up an imaginary\, par
allel space in which to consider ideas of place\, identity and belonging.
 ”\n\nOriental Museum Curator\, Dr Craig Barclay\, said\, “It is very e
xciting to be able to bring to Durham such compelling work by two wonderfu
l artists. It is a great opportunity for our visitors to experience first-
hand the creativity and vision of artists from this often misunderstood r
egion.”\n\nMohammed Joha and Hazem Harb add something unique to this bod
y of work\, bringing their own very human responses to life in Gaza throug
h their paintings… Harb and Joha are part of a remarkable genealogy of a
rtists who have given us a deep understanding of the inhumanity\, but also
the humanity that features in conflict.” Michaela Crimmin\, co-director
of Culture+Conflict\, a lecturer and research associate at the Royal Coll
ege of Art\, and an independent curator.\n\nTraces and Revelations opens t
 o the public on Friday\, 4th April\, and runs until Sunday\, 5th October 2
 014. For more details visit https://www.dur.ac.uk/oriental.museum/exhibiti
